Safety First…

So this morning I’m heading into my subway station and there is one of those NYPD random search tables, staffed by three cops, supposedly making sure that our track rats can continue to lead lives undisturbed by Sarin gas or ninja throwing stars.
Oh no, I thought, here we go. Because you see here I was, big bearded, somewhat swarthy, hauling the three stuffed, unmarked black bags you see here past them and through the turnstile onto one of those oh-so vulnerable station platforms, where we’re supposed to say something if we see something.
I’m bracing myself for a search , but none ensues, and As I walk down the steps to the platform I’m a little huffy: What? I don’t look menacing enough? I’d stop me. I was profiling myself.
It was just as well that they didn’t stop me, because if they had, we would have had to spend a lot of time talking about the floggers, paddles, ropes, plugs, hoods and other items of, er, amusement those bags currently contain.
