The High Life…

Lehigh gets a cab ride, and is mostly unimpressed. She’s been with my mom for almost a month. I’m happy to have her back home.

Double plus…

Lehigh was full of beans this morning: rolling, tugging, snorting. I had an excellent cup of the coffee that D-L brought me from the Mission and had sufficient hot water for the shower. Allergies were under control on the morning walk, and I made it to work in time for my meeting. So life, as they say, is good.

I am going to have to bear down and figure out some time to work on new pieces. That goal has still been eluding me.

Again on the plus side I managed to snag a wonderful graphic memoir at MoCCA: Adam Bourret’s I’m Crazy, which my friend Tony had also recommended without me knowing. I’m going to pass on the recommendation: I don’t love all the drawing, but the writing and pacing are both beautiful, and the story is genuinely affecting. I read it in bits and pieces over the past week, and loved it.

Look out…

Lehigh’s back home. And taking her rightful place on the bed. Yesterday I was awoken by three friends and a birthday cake of astonishing artistry, now I have to contemplate the prospect of eating most of a layer cake. Must invite more company over!

As much as Lehigh wants to help, it’s a chocolate cake, so she’ll just have to cheer me on from the side lines. Had a reasonable walk today and learned a bit about my DSLR. There’s good and bad news, but one thing that struck is the way that once you shoot with something enough, you internalize the possibilities of the equipment. These days I know what my regular cameras (including the iPhone) will do with the shooting conditions I find myself in. I haven’t gone through that experience with the Nikon yet, especially with the different lenses. But I’ll get there.

Porn I say, Porn…

Of the foodal variety. No turkey today at my family dinner, but here’s the pumpkin cheese cake my aunt made. My sister was the main artiste, producing a savory bread pudding with kale, fall off the bone roast lamb, Brussels sprouts, potatoes and even a batch of luscious Parmesan and butter biscuits, made she said, because she was anxious about the lamb.

It was all as good as good can be. I brought some Spanish wine, that I took a little gamble on and was pleasantly surprised by.

In the beginning of the day I met a friend for a quiet walk around Central Park. The sky had cleared, and it was warm and perfect.

After it was all done I came home and fed Lehigh a few leftovers. Just so you guys know I’m not the stern parent some of you think I am. She seemed as thankful to have me as I am to have her, and indeed as I am to have the rich, lush life that I do.

This is the look that says: “Take me out, you lazy, lazy sod”…

It’s clear and warm in Brooklyn. I’m going to go out in it (again) in a little while. Got to soak up any autumnal pleasantness as I find it. For the first time in many days I’m not waking up with an immediate deadline or meeting hanging over my head. What lightness!

Last night I also got to see the fantastic work by a group of Alumni from ICP here. I was thrilled to see people going out in to the world and doing new things. There was so much pride flowing throughout the room, and I loved being able to add my little bit to the pile. So here’s another way I’m lucky: I read people complaining about the privileged, know nothing, whiny students they have to deal with, and I’ve got to say that that is not my case at all. People have varying degrees of commitment and success, it’s true, but overall, I have nothing but admiration for them. They set up an organization, sheetrocked the walls, and threw a New York art event. So very groovy.

It’s all about moving past fear, fear that nothing will happen for you, that you’ve got nothing to say, that other people control your destiny. Action puts the lie to those fears.

(as if to underline all of this, itunes just threw up Chic’s “Good Times”. Clams on the half shell, and roller skates, roller skates)

The big E’s inside of you and me…

I know it’s wrong to question good fortune, so I won’t. For some reason Amazon is giving away MP3s of just about all of Mojo Nixon’s music. Yep he could easily be classed an ’80′s one hit wonder, but there’s something great about all of his crackpot bitter rants that make this a very good deal. And he does a mean version of “Just stopped in to see what condition my condition was in” which is the soundtrack to “Gutter Balls”, the Dude’s Busby Berkeley inspired dream sequence in Big Lebowski.

I can see from all the comments it garnered that people are very concerned about fruit and its qualities, as explored in my post yesterday. I’m also shocked to learn that taking Lipitor means that you can’t eat grapefruit. That the same for all citrus?

My mom is strongly hinting that I’m supposed to pick up a new costume for Lehigh, since she will be staying with her for Halloween. And by strongly hinting I mean she sent me an email with a bunch of pictures of dogs in costumes with the question “what is her new outfit going to be?” She has also commanded me to blow up the drawing of of Lehigh I posted a while back , the one where I’m dancing all cute, but the only part of any interest to her is the drawing of the dog, so she can have that on her desktop at home. The priorities are clear.

Sit in the dark. Then go out in the dark.

Sweaty around the house today as well as outside of it. Spent most of it indoors until I heeded the siren call of the cinema and went off to see You, the Living with Thor, Ed, and Jeff. Delicious deadpan Swedes, shot in a 1970′s christmas candy color scheme. Some of the best thunder you’ll ever encounter in a movie. Just the sort of thing I’m happy to see these days. There were tasty cookies and later, flank steak.

For a reason that is not clear to me, one of the street lamps closest my door has been removed, leaving a pocket of mysterious darkness, a gap in our block’s grin. The lights of the apartments don’t reach the street, and so there’s a slight bit of menace beneath the big trees that line the sidewalk. There’s nothing to be afraid of on my block, but I have been conditioned to a certain interval of illumination, so the fact that there’s some missing now unsettles me, although tonight I was the threatening figure: well not me exactly but as I was heading back in from Lehigh’s evening walk, I heard “Mommy I’m sacred!” and saw a young girl clamber up into her mothers arms and duck her head down in fear. They were headed to the ice cream truck stopped down the block. “It’s a tiny dog! How can she be scared? It’s stupid!” fumed her brother, all of eight and already hard bitten, stomping along beside them. “She’s just five, she’s frighted” said mom, as the girl squealed a bit, increasingly nervous at the notion that our paths were going to cross very soon and that even her mother’s arms might not provide adequate protection from the dog in the dark. I hustled Lehigh up the steps, and inside in time to hear one more exasperated “It’s just Stupid!…” before closing the door. Five or no, I felt for her.

More from Myrtle Beach…

One evening during the trip to see Dad, we went to “the Nation’s Largest Gift Shop” aka The Gay Dolphin and while they had many, many delightful things, all displayed in this same vertiginous manner, I had the same experience I’ve had for most of my life:

The section isn’t quite in the frame, but trust me, there’s no “nayland” plate.

In all likelihood, I’d be a little worried if there was one.

And now on to more frantic packing. I’m going off on an extended trip, and today I said goodbye to Lehigh for about a month. Longest we’ve been apart, and I’m already a little saddened by it.

Cashing in…

Pals for Sunday poker and cigars. Kerry, Boymeat, Scotty, Scot, Thor ad Lolita. We played the usual silly dealer’s choice games. Everyone brought very responsible snacks, including the unpictured , who brought cupcakes that were delightfully tidy as well as tasty.

Eventually I will forgive Boymeat for winning so much money all the time, especially since I managed to come out a few buck ahead myself. Lehigh is glad of the company and attention for a while until the smoke gets to be too much and she retreats to the other end of the house. She gets treats from the visitors, but even so I can tell that there are times when people get to be to much for her. Not unlike myself actually. But afterwards, once everyone has left, she is eager for cuddles and kisses from me. A little bit or reassurance.

We are in the full force of summer. People walking along the block, taking it easy. The windows are wide open, to aid in clearing out the smoke. The air that flows in through them is luscious.
