B.I.Y. 002 “Art Ghost”

This month’s piece combines philosophical musings about the death of art with the visual stylings of Charles Schultz.  Hallowe’en is almost here, so why should you be the only one in a costume? And once the holiday is over, your house will look even more melancholic with this installed.

What you’ll need:
One pillowcase
One grommeting set
One pair of scissors
needle and thread
a pencil
(optional) a skeptical onlooker like Lehigh.

1: Select a piece of art in your house that will fit in the pillowcase, and which hangs from a single nail. I’ve selected a painting in my living room by  Roger Hankins entitled “Raven”.

2 Slide the pillowcase over the art and then use the nail on the wall to mark a place on “back” of the case.  Remove the art

3.Using your mark as a guide, position the wooden block from the grommet kit between the two layers of the pillowcase.  Punch a hole in the layer where the mark is and install the grommet (if you’ve never used a grommet kit before, get a scrap piece of fabric and do a little practice)

4: Turn the pillowcase over and cut a pair of eye holes in the “front”.

5: Fold the pillowcase in half and use the pencil to draw an “M” shape near the open end.

6: Cut along the “M”.  When you open the pillowcase out again you should have something like this.

7: Download the authenticating label (by right-clicking and selecting “save file as” on this link). Print the label out on card stock, cut it out and then sign and date it

8: Turn the pillowcase inside out.  Select one of the tails on the pillowcase and use the needle and thread to sew the label on to it.

9: Re-insert the art, slip the grommeted hole over the nail in the wall and rehang the whole thing.  You’re all done.

10: Take a picture of this haunting afterlife of meaning and send it in to naylandblake at naylandblake.net I’ll post it here in the gallery.
