I’m sick of the use of the red/blue states graphic everywhere. Here is a map, made by urso that shows how the states would look with each state’s color being a reflection of the popular vote rather than electoral votes.
Among other things, here is proof that urso is a graphics genius, if you needed any more convincing.
You may want to post this around the office some.
This is quite brilliant (note to self: add immediately)!
Hope The Incredibles was…err…incredible!

purple…. hmmmm…. is this a sneaky way of implying that we are becoming a lavendar nation?

interesting, there is a pretty even color across, with some darker patches in either direction, but fairly smooth nonetheless.
This implies a country that overall was very evenly split, even in the central US….

Thanks for putting this up (and to urso for making it). It is a welcome antidote to all this overdetermined red/blue divisiveness.

Nayland, Unfortunately those of us who have a color problems think the color separation should be more distinct (use a rainbow ?). As an example I can not tell the difference between California and Florida. Partly it is because I can’t put Florida up next to California. Maybe, I’m red blue confused. This should not be taken as a criticism of the map. Good work Urso. Mark

Maybe using black and white instead of blue and red would contrast the differences better.

Greyscale is the way to go. I’m not sure how this map looks to those afflicted with red-green colorblindedness.
Still, it is a visually appealing map.

Ironically, it was designed by someone with partial red-green color-blindness. 🙂
I think the lack of contrast in it really *is* the point. The red states really aren’t that red…and the blue states are really *that* blue.
For fun, I created another version that contrasts it with the polling data from other countries on how they would vote:

Is your training in graphic design or cartography? These are lovely maps; they have a sort of elegance that I don’t usually see in the works of most geographers.

Architecture, actually.
