Ok so since I was getting security alerts, I thought I would fix a problem on my desktop machine (deskunder? does anyone keep those huge boxes on their desks anymore?). So much for my feeble gestures towards geekiness – the damn thing is now stuck in safe mode and numerous attempts to reinstall xp have proved futile. So it looks like time for a clean install, if I can even manage one with consequent loss of , well everything, because duh, I didn’t back up. I suppose i should be grateful for having a few years free of windows horror. I was expecting this to happen all the time once I switched over from mac. And maybe it’s a little lesson that I spend too much damn time in front of the computer. Biggest loss? Digital pics from London and Briar Bash
dunno about XP, but i ran Win 98 SE for a while without a hitch, then fell into your current situation…after that, i had to do a clean install every…8 months? or so – the compy just kept on fucking up.
hopefully, you won’t have this problem, but it was enough aggravation to make me return to my maccie roots.
In many cases, it’s possible to reinstall an OS without reformatting your whole hard drive. This could allow you to regain access to your stuff without losing it.
Good luck, handsome…
When I went through the same thing, I was still able to save stuff onto diskettes (remember those?), and I did just that.
Now of course, I have a re-writeable cd onto which I save everything personal every week or two.
Ah yes…
…very sensible and exactly what I should have been doing. I think I’ve had so little trouble that I grew lazy about it. Let it suffice to say the last few days have been spent shopping for portable hard drives and back up devices.
